Never ever give up on your dreams. Where there is a will, there is a way. These real life stories prove it!

Thomas Edison, Inventor
Invented the phonograph, motion picture camera, and the electric light bulb. Edison was quoted as saying it would take a matter of a few weeks to invent the light bulb. In reality, it would take him almost two years of 6,000 failed attempts, in his experiments of the different carbonized plant fibers, looking for a carbon filament for his light bulb. During one of his experiments, Edison’s laboratory was destroyed by an explosion. It was at this time we would think it would be all over for Edison, as he did not have the capital to build a new laboratory. It was his dear friend Henry Ford who heard about the explosion, who believed if anyone was going to find the answer it would be Edison. It was this faith, Ford had in Edison, he would loan Edison the money to build a new laboratory. Shortly, thereafter Edison would invent an entire lighting system rather than just a single light bulb.

Edison succeeded where others had failed. Edison chose to look at the big picture and created a lighting system including wiring, plugs, and connectors, to operate more than one light bulb at once. Thomas Edison's achievements include holding a world record of 1093 patents for inventions.
His most famous quote: “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.”

Walt Disney, Disneyland
Walt Disney was raised on a farm near Marceline, Missouri; he became interested in drawing at only six years of age, selling his first sketches to neighbors when he was only seven years old. At 16 Disney was sent to France to drive an ambulance for Red Cross, the ambulance was covered stem to stern in Disney cartoons. It was at the age of 21, Walt had started to create “The Alice Comedies”, half way through the production, he ran out of money, and went bankrupt. Walt had discussed his financial problems with his brother Roy, who suggested they pool all their resources together; in the process of pooling all their resources together, they obtained a loan for $500 to set up shop in their uncle’s garage. Shortly after they received an order from New York and expanded. Walt's life long dream was to create the “Happiest Place on Earth” which we now know as Disneyland. He had drawn up plans for his huge Disneyland fun park, and was turned down 302 times before he got financing for his dream: Disneyland. Today, due to his persistence, millions of people have shared in ‘the joy of Disney’.

J.K Rowling, Harry Potter
Joanne Rowling was born and raised in England, Rowling started writing fantasy stories when she was 6 years old. Her first story, Rabbit, was filled with interesting characters such as a large bee called Miss Bee. Eventually, she graduated from school to become a bilingual secretary due her parents persisting she would make a great secretary. However, Rowling while working as a secretary found it difficult to remain attentive, and often would write ideas for stories, rather than taking company notes.
A few years later Rowling would marry and have a daughter. Unfortunately, her marriage ended in a sad divorce, where Rowling found herself unemployed and collecting welfare to survive. This caused Rowling to feel a great sense of failure and unworthiness, as a result she admits to suffering from major depression, to the point she even contemplated suicide. The only reason she did not commit suicide was due to her daughter, as she asked herself, “who will take care of her and how will this impact the rest of her life.” What’s amazing is Rowling in suffering such an array of difficult circumstances was able to somehow find the strength within, to go back to her childhood dream, and that was to write the Harry Potter story. In writing her first manuscript she would often go to the cafés to write, as the cafés kept her and her daughter warm during England’s cold winter months. Rowling in completing her first manuscript had submitted her manuscript to a number of publishers. Her manuscript was turned down by many, who told her it would never sell due to a lack of demand for such a book. Despite, these rejections, Rowling refused to give up, she kept sending out her manuscript, and it was a smaller publishing house based in London that agreed to publish the first Harry Potter book.
Her writings in the summer of 2000, had reportedly earned over $400 million for her first three Harry Potter books, which have been printed in 35 languages and sold over 30 million copies. She is now known as the most successful writer in the world with the most sales, in the shortest amount of time.

Keep on going, and the chances are that you will stumble on something, perhaps when you are least expecting it. I never heard of anyone ever stumbling on something sitting down. ~Charles F. Kettering

It's our connections with one another that leads to SUCCESS!

A comparison of two world renowned artists, demonstrates just how important it is for us to connect with others in achieving our life long goals.

Vincent Van Gogh vs. Pablo Picasso

Vincent Van Gogh was born in 1853, it is well documented that Vincent rarely if ever socialized or networked with others during the course of his life. He was known as a loner. Even as a child while he attended school he would keep to himself and rarely if ever communicated with the other children at his school.
Vincent had a great passion for art and many of his paintings depict the feelings of loneliness he experienced, which makes them so powerful and insightful. It is very sad, that Vincent being so talented was unable to have the confidence to network with others, so as to get his great works noticed. This inability to network with others led Vincent to suffer from not only extreme loneliness, but much frustration, major depression and often expressed how he wished no longer to live. It was out of his great despair he committed suicide in 1890, he was only 37 years old. During the course of his life Vincent produced 2000 paintings, which only one was ever sold during the course of his life. The most incredible fact is one of the paintings he painted in the last year of his life was the Portrait of Dr. Gachet, and it was this painting that sold for 82.5Million in 1990, exactly 100 years after his death. There is no doubt in my mind had Vincent had a greater level of confidence in himself and networked with others, the outcome of his life would have been completely different.

Pablo Picasso was born in 1881, Pablo just like Vincent had a strong passion for art, however, unlike Vincent, Pablo was extremely social during the course of his life despite the extreme difficulties he would experience. Pablo after studying art would relocate to France, where he met his best friend Max. Pablo and Max would rent an apartment together, Pablo would work at night and sleep during the day. While, Max would work by day and sleep during the night. These were times of extreme cold, poverty, and desperation. The cold winters called for desperate measures, in getting their apartment warm during the cold months Pablo would often burn his paintings. Despite these difficult times, Pablo believed he could become a great artist and strived to make himself known, he would carry his paintings around France introducing himself to art dealers and galleries, he would experience many rejections, but eventually a gallery owner was impressed by Pablo and his works. The gallery owner gave Pablo his own gallery space, he was 26 years old. In displaying his art he sold his first painting within the first week of displaying his art works and the sales continued. In the course of his life Pablo sold 1000's of art pieces. Pablo died in 1973 at which time his estate was valued at 50Million.

This clearly demonstrates the power of connecting with others. If we don't put ourselves out there and show the world what we have to offer, how will anyone ever come to know of us? That’s why you need to be courageous, have faith and get your works out there.

Success Happens when you Change your Perspective

I want to share a wonderful story that shows the importance of recognising: What we do have, and not what we don't have, and how this impacts our success in life.

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: "I am blind, please help." There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked, "Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?" The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way." I wrote: "Today is a beautiful day but I cannot see it."
Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?
Moral of the Story: Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively.
When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence. Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.
The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling, and even more beautiful is, knowing that you are the reason behind the smile!

Never Before has it been so difficult to achieve a life-long dream!

I know all to well the frustration, depression and complete sense of helplessness when it comes to achieving a long-life dream. You give everything you have got, sometimes thousands of hours of devotion to just end up where you started, no where closer to achieving what you hoped your entire life to achieve.

I myself grew up in poverty and always admired the beautiful clothes I would see other little girls wear, you know the ones with pink thrills that go all the way down to the knees, have thrills around the sleeves and bows. My eyes would be so mesmerized whenever I saw such a beautiful dress and I could not stop thinking of how special I would feel if only I could wear a dress like that. I decided right then and there I would one day be a great fashion designer, not only would I then be able to wear beautiful dresses, but I would also have the opportunity to design even prettier ones. I remember I was only 6 years old when I would draw pictures of pretty dresses, imagine myself in them and dance around in my room imagining I was Cinderella and everyone was admiring my beautiful dress.

I would go to college and obtain a degree in business by working five nights a week cleaning office buildings, as I knew to succeed in fashion I needed to learn about the fashion business. After graduating in business, I knew I needed a product, as you need to show what you can offer in the real form. I would work numerous jobs, save the money I made, purchase supplies and make my designs by night. After two whole years of working practically every night I had completed 6 outfits, I am not the best sewer, but the sewing flaws are not noticeable from a distance. I applied to showcase my designs at San Francisco fashion week, I was accepted, however, I was told I needed a minimum of 14 outfits. I only completed 6 outfits and not the 14 required to showcase at fashion week. Therefore, my dream of having my fashions displayed on the runway was not going to happen anytime soon. I was low on capital, time and skills. I then tried everything to get my fashions noticed, I contacted celebrity websites, asking if they would wear one of my designs, created a website, contacted and wrote to well over 100 editors of fashion magazines, including Anna Wintour of Vogue Magazine, you name it I tried it. All this effort with no results, had me feeling no matter what I do, or how hard I try nothing is ever going to work in my favor. I was stuck in a rut; I tried everything and gave it my all, sacrificing everything I had just to end up with not a single break in sight. I asked why is it I can’t get a break even though I try so hard? I realized it was due to three main reasons which limit us in fulfilling our life-long goals, aspirations and dreams.
1. The lack of capital/money it is well known in the fashion industry the cost of launching a fashion collection, on average approximately $750,000;
2. The lack of connections unfortunately I don’t have Donald Trump as a father, the Ivy League education or know the people at the top that can get me in the door;
3. Lastly, I do not have all the skills required, I have skills in business and generating ideas, but have practically no skills in pattern making, and am very limited in my sewing abilities, therefore limiting the designs I can create. I can't tell you how many times I would unpick and re-stitch over and over again due to the wrong placement or the fabric not sitting right.

It was in my frustration of not having all the resources and abilities to achieve my dream. I realized so many just like me, face this same problem everyday! So I asked myself what can we do about it, how do we achieve when so much is against us?
I started to research all the success stories of people who started with nothing and achieved great success from practically nothing. I found the secret to their success, each and everyone of them used the power of connection.

Some examples are:
Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak of Apple Wozniak was the engineer who built the first apple processor for $500. He later met Jobs who said, he believed he could sell it at a profit. Together they achieved each others dream. Wozniak's engineering skills combined with Jobs marketing skills.

The Dixie Chicks who played on the street corners of Dallas for small change. Later they would meet Natalie who joined the group. They would pool together $5000 to record their first demo tape. Sony music had seen them play in Austin and signed a long term deal, which resulted in the Dixie Chicks receiving 13 Grammys and selling over 30 million records.

Dolce and Gabbana (D&G)
Met while working at an atelier in Milan, they both shared a great passion for fashion, by combining their skills and talents they created one of the most world recognized labels.

There are countless other examples including: Proactiv, Google, Siegfried & Roy and Microsoft.
Therefore, it is possible to achieve our dreams! It really comes down to our ability to connect with other like-minded individuals who share the same dream, and by bringing together different sets of skills one can achieve their dreams with a greater level of certainty.
